Meeting 15: Global Issues Discussion (Day 2)

Evaluation: Please put your evaluation in the envelope of my door (rm.439) by Friday, July 31.

Issue 1: Rich and Poor
Main Points:
- The reasons that the rich countries are getting richer and the poor countries poorer:
  1. Poor countries borrow so much money from rich countries and they cannot pay it back so the interest on bthe debt increases. Because of the debt, poorer countries cannot afford to spend money on fixing social problems
  2. Corruption of leaders
What can we do to make this problem better?
- Give more money but make sure it does not go into the leaders' pockets
- Donate money ourselves to poor countries for solving social problems
- Instead of money send people who can manage the money
- We can easily give money to poor countries but it is not good.It is better to give money to support the basis of industry so countries can make money (=grow their economy) by themselves.
- We must change the international political and economic order. Every country consumes products made in China because the products made in China are not expensive. Most of the money goes to foreign country investors. Because so mnay products are made in China workers in richer countries cannot find employment.

To learn more, please attend the United Nations University Conference on Nov 21- 23

Issue 2: Global Warming
Main Points:
There is a lot of CO2 and Methane and they cause global warming.
Global warming causes many problems. For example:
1. Ice melting in the North and South Pole causes the sea levels to rise
2. Rise in temperatures causes storms

What can we do to make the problem better?
Don't eat beef.
Don't use cars
Commute by bicycle, bus, train, walking
and much more.....

Issue 3: Children
Main Points
There are a lot of children around the world who cannot receive education. One problems is that many children will not be able to work, they become homeless and are forced to steal food.
Another problem is that children are forced to work instead of going to school.
It's a big problem that they cannot have an education.

What can we do?
We can do some volunteer work. We can donate pens, notebooks and we can go to poorer countries and teach subjects for free.

Meeting 14: Global Issues Discussion Day 1

In today's meeting the Uighur group presented about disease and the Philippines group presented about weapons and war. After the discussion various MMCE members also gave various ideas about how we can make the problems better. It was a very interesting meeting today and I am looking forward to next week's meeting. Please remember that next week we will start MMCE at 10:20 AM.
Below is a summary of the main points of each presentation.

Disease: (By Uighur)

Main Point of the Presentation
Developing countries suffer from infectious diseases such as Aids, cholera, influenza, tuberculosis, measles and malaria. Many people dies from these diseases every year even though these diseases are preventable. The most dangerous diseases in developed countries are cancer and hear disease.

What can be done to make the problem better?
  • Help people change their life conditions such as getting access to clean water
  • .Education about infectious diseases
  • Donate money for vaccinations.
  • "Don't give fish but teach how to fish"
  • Make drugs such as drugs to treat Aids cheaper
  • People should change their lifestyle to prevent health problems (no overeating, etc,)

Weapons and War: (by the Philippines)

Main point of the presentation
There are many wars going on even today.
Ex. Only in Africa there are more than 10 wars.
8 international wars and 25 civil wars in 2005

One problem that results from these wars is land mines
About 2000 people are killed or injured by landmines every month.
It is difficult to remove landmines because it is dangerous and expensive.
Fact:Between China and Vietnam there are 2 million land mines

What can be done?
  • Monetary support for removing mines (Opposite opinion - giving money is not good because they might use the money for other military affairs. )
  • Find the landmines and mark them
  • Don't make new landmines
  • Government should persuade countries with landmines to join the Ottawa Treaty
  • United Nations has the removing mines project and we can give monetary support to the United Nations. It is better than giving it to some government.

Summaries of Last Week's Presentations

Uyghr

Uyghur is regarded as unknown place for many people in the world. Even though people don’t know much of its cultures, we can see some of them because Uyghur is the mother of many things in the world. For example, noodles are origins of pasta, and the Uyghur language is origin of east languages such as Turkish.
Also,Uyghur is really multicultural place. There are 9 countries around Uyghur (China, Pakistan, Mongolia, Turkey etc.) that have influences to its culture. Though there are many faces in Uyghur and some looks like a Chinese, only 10 percent of the Uyghur population can speak Chinese and 100 percent of the people are Muslim.
As to our group’s survey, almost all are right but there are some wrong stereotypes. Uyghur people are not nomadic nor nomadic.

France

Food:French live on bread. Wine is famous, but
Beaujolais Nouveau isn't treat an
expensive wine. And cheese has nothing
to do with France.

People:There are basically mix people in
France. Black,Arabian...there are
various race. And,there are many
strikes.

National flag:Flag of France was a symbol
of the revolution movement.
It expresses freedom and
equality.

Russia

People know a lot about Russian people. For example, Dostoevsky, Putin, Rasputin, Sharapova, Arshavin, Tchaikovskii and so on.
Many people think that Russia is a cold country, but it depends on season and locations. In northern place, it is very cold and has a lot of snow in winter. On the other hand, Saint Petersburg is about 25 degrees now.
The location of Russia is good because Russia locates between Europe and Asia. Because of the closeness of Europe, Marina can study English and use English, and because of the closeness of Asia, she can learn Asian languages. She chose Japanese as her third language among the Asian languages.

Philippines

Meeting 8: Preparing for the Breaking Down National Stereotypes Discussion

Making Mind Maps

I.
As a group, please make a mind map based on the data you collected. In the center of the mind map should be an image of your country and then you should have an image of each category. Also, somewhere in your mind map I think it would be good if you could include some basic information about the country. See the data here.

Here is a sample mind map of a country from last year.
Country: Mexico
Categories: Food, Geography, Artifact, Sports, Color, Plant/Animal, Image

Country: China
Categories: Culture, Disaster, Event, Food, Person, Personality, Policy, Society

II. Unfortunately, I have not received the completed data from 3 groups. For the next MMCE, I would like you to do the following:
  • Please contact your guest THIS WEEK and arrange to give them the categorized and sorted data . Please tell them that you would like them to speak for about 5 minutes about the following:
  1. Which responses that people wrote about your region/country are you proud of?
  2. Is there anything written that you think is not completely true or wrong? If so, which responses?
  3. Is their anything you would like to say about your region/ country that has not been written? If so, what would you like to say?
  • Please arrange to meet your guest again BEFORE MMCE on June 17 and escort him/her to the MMCE room (rm.405).

  • Which country has the most serious envirnonmental issues?
  • Which country has the most ethnically diverse population?
  • Which country has the lowest/highest infant mortality rate and life expectancy?
  • Which country has the most languages?
  • What other interesting comparisons can you make between the countries
2. Return to your group and do the following
  • Make a list of words that you learned during the country comparison. From the list, choose 5 words that you think are essential for your group and you would like to learn.

Meeting 6: Culture and Cultural Phenomenon

I Review

How are culture 1 and culture 2 different?
Please discuss human nature, culture and personality.

What are products?
What are examples of products?

What are practices?
Please define Acts and operations

II Culture and Cultural Phenomenon (Cont.)
Practices: Scenarios, life

Practices: Non-verbal communication
Proxemics
proxemics test
- Shogo and Hiroki : 20 centimeters
- Marina and Aimi: 60 centimeters
- Atsumi and Yu: 1 meter
- David and Yukitake: 1 meter
- Yoshiki and Mr. Hall: 0.5 cm

What does this say about acceptable physical distance in your culture?
- Japanese dislike short distance (less than 60cm)
- Different by situation but normally 50CM - 60 CM is acceptable distance. Friends can speak at a shorter distance.
- When we are facing eachother the distance is farther and when we are standing side by side the distance is shorter.

III Explanation of Breaking Down National Stereotypes Discussion
Give a Survey

Your group is responsible for asking 30 people the following question about the country of your guest:
What are the first three things you think of when you hear the country name "________"?
「国X」と聞いたらどのような事を思い浮かぶか、3つ挙げてください。
In addition to the above question, please ask the age and occupation of the person answering the question. Try not to ask the same people as other CLGs and also please do not ask any member of MMCE to answer the question. Lastly, please ask a Japanese citizen to answer the question.
Your CLG should download the Excel File on the blog and enter the data (The answers of the 30 respondents) in it.
o Do not worry about the "category" column.
o The data should be in English and Japanese, because some participants will not speak English and others will not speak Japanese.
o To do this efficiently, each member of your group can ask 5 - 7 people, and you can enter the data into the excel file together.
o Please e-mail JH the excel file by Monday, June 1, 5PM.

Meeting 5: Culture and Cultural Phenonmenon

Note: For the past couple of years I have been discussing the same cultural theory for MMCE primarily referencing Geert Hofstede. This year, I have decided to alter the content and look at culture from a more complete perspective by incorporating other theories into the introduction of culture. I hope that you all find this meeting interesting and useful.

Our Objective: Understand the profound influence culture can have on the way we behave and our outlook on the world.

Today's co-Facilitators: Sayah and Panda

Agenda
1. Review of Meeting 4:
  • What did you think about the other culture you met last week? Please say some key words.
  • Why did you say such words?
  • What could you have done to make your first meeting better?

  • 2. An Introduction to Culture
    a) What is culture?
    b)The Culture Pyramid
    c) Cultural Phenomenon: products, practices, perspectives, communities, persons,

The Iceberg Model of Culture drawn by Panda

Meeting 4: An Introduction to the kind of Culture we will study in MMCE

Here is our agenda for today's Meeting:
    1) A Discussion of "Maybe we go skating"

    Japanese GroupDutch Group
Describe how you think the Dutch students feel about the Japanese student's behavior.
    Answer:
    - J students behavior is ambiguous (not clear)
    - The behavior of the Japanese students is irritating (irritates them) Why? Because the D students want clear answers from the Japanese students.
Describe how you think the Japanese students feel about the dutch students' behavior.
    Answer:
    - It is not good to say too clearly (speak straightly) Why? Perhaps it is important to cooperate others.
    - The Japanese students think the Dutch students candid(frank) people. The Japanese students do not know how to communicate in English very well so they are confused by the Dutch students' behavior.
Identify the reason why the two sides are conflicting.
    Answer:
    - Difference of culture. The Japanese students are indirect people and the Dutch students say directly.
    - Behind the backgrouns of J culture, Japanese people pay more attention to other people's opinion than their own indivudual opinion. Because it is more polite to reserve their own ideas in front of foreigners with different background cultures. And the Japanese people want to show respect to keep away from direct decision. Therefore, they wait for their questioners' expectancy of answer.
Give advice to the Japanese side about how to get along better with the Dutch side.
    Answer:
    - Don't be afraid to say your own opinion clearly
    - Don't hesitate to say your own opinion clearly
    - Honesty is the best key to make friends with the foreigners
Give advice to the Dutch side about how to get along better with the Japanese side.
    Answer:
    - We belong to different thinking types so we have different behavior habits. So the problem is our problem, not just with one side or the other. My advice is that we should spend more time to understand. We must have patience.

    - Please explain detailed information to the Japanese students. For example, date, members' names, place,
    - Students should talk to J students step by step. They should ask questions to the group, not to just one person because typical Japanese students want to act with the group. Sometimes it is hard for them to decide things immediately, so the Dutch students should give the Japanese students time to think about the question. For example, give us the answer by tomorrow.

    2) Short talk on "What is Culture?" (Handout to fill out is here) - This will be discussed next meeting
    3) The Martian and Earthling Activity

Preparation for Meeting on May 20

Please be ready to discuss the following about the role play:
    1. What did you think about the other culture you met? Please brainstorm key words.
    2. Why did you say such words?
    3. What caused these misunderstandings?
    4. Could you have done anything to avoid these misunderstandings?
Next week's assistant facilatators will be Sayahh & Panda. Today's assistant facilitator was 37. Great job 37!

Preparation for Meeting on May 27
    1. Go to the CIA World Factbook
As a group find out the following information for your country. Write your information in this sheet and be prepared to report it next meeting:

    Environment:
Area (How much bigger is the area than Japan?), Climate, Natural Resources, Current environmental issues:

    People:
Population, Age Structure, Infant Mortality rate, Life expectancy, Ethnic groups, Languages,
    Literacy

    Government:
Country Name (conventional long form), Capital, Government type

    Economy:

    Meeting 3: Making a Difference

For Meeting 3 we will do the following:

    1. Warm up: Watch the video from last week
    2. Follow up Discussion: Please talk about the meaning of this statement: (30 Minutes)
      • If you think you are too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room. - Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop
      a. What do you think is the true meaning of this statement? Please reword it in English.
      - You are very small in the world but you have a big impact so you can change the world in a good way and bad way.
      - In this world I have a small existence but I can bring a great change.
      - Example: If you are small but we try to not throw out garbage every day in our field for our environment.
      - We can do many things but we don't notice what we can do.
      - We all have the power to change the world, so I might have a little power but when we get together the power is very big. So we should cooperate with eachother.

      b. Can you provide some examples in which individuals can become mosquitoes in relation to Global Issues?
      - Using my own bag (for shopping)
      - Pakistani school teacher used to teach poor students in the park. Provided children with books and writing supplies even though he was not wealthy. The students he taught would teach other students. So, his education spread. He has started a community of educators who have made a difference.
      - Famous theory in China: "The Influence of the Butterfly" It says that if one butterfly in America flaps its wings, there will be a big storm in China. Another example, our lifestyles have influenced the green house effect. So if we do not eat meat it can help the environment.
      - In Japan we have a lot of TV and computer and we use them during our free time. We use a lot of energy, so we think that we have to have more time for family. We can reduce electricity that way.
        - Using public transportation to decrease CO2.
After discussing the quotes, I would like to discuss how you think if the world were 100 people and this activity are related.
        Other examples: The Mercy Centre

The above quotes were excerpted from Sampredo, R. & Hillyard, S. (2004). Global Issues. Oxford University Press, p. 41

Meeting 2: Looking at our World

Goal: Before we start looking at other countries, other cultures and Global Issues, let's look at the earth as a whole to get an image of the kind of planet we live in.
      1. Try the geography challenge for your region again. Were you able to identify more countries this time?
      2. Fill in the information on this sheet by yourself. As a group, discuss what you think the answers might be. Lastly, watch the movie If the world were 100 people and compare your answers to the real ones. (To view the movie on the internet, you might have to download the Adobe Flash Player Plug-in) . Did the results of the movie meet your expectations? Please explain. (Write this as a comment in the blog. Next time we will discuss it in MMCE)
Next Meeting: Can we make a difference? and getting along with different cultures.

Meeting 1: Welcome to MMCE (April 15, 2009)

      Welcome to MMCE.
I apologize but because of moving offices and other major events my planning of this year's MMCE has not progressed as I had hoped. Today, I will talk about our goals, but at the moment I do not have a plan on how we will reach them. I think that this year will be a little bit of an adventure and I am looking forward to beginning it with you.

Here is the plan for today's meeting:
      1) Introduce MMCE and our goals
      2) Make CLGs (Based on global issue of interest)
      3) Do the world geography challenge in groups. Regions will be chosen based on the countries that we will study.
      1. Uighur, China (Global Issue to be studied: Diseases)2. France (Global Issue to be studied: Rich & Poor)3. Russia (Global Issue to be studied: Global Warming)4. Egypt (?) (Global Issue to be studied: Children) 5. Philippines (Global Issue to be studied: Weapons and War) (?)

      For next time
      1. Introduce yourself by writing a comment on this post. When introducing yourself, please do not use your real name. I would like you to think of a handle name instead. You can write anything you want but I would like you to include the following: A) The group you belong to; B)The number of countries you were able to identify on the quiz.
      2. Please practice your world geography knowledge at the following site. Next week, we will see if you are able to identify more countries!
